There can be a number of reasons for an investor to sell a stock. To determine when you should sell a stock, investors should review what the original goal was of buying each individual stock.

Is it a speculative play?

I bought Katanga Mining Ltd. (TSX:KAT) about three weeks ago as a speculative play. The stock popped 26% on Tuesday on good news.

  1. Selling can be tricky. This is why it is always best to diversify, learn to rebalance, and hold for long periods.

    Statistically, over the long-term, this strategy works the best for returns.

  2. For me, when i have sold it was always too soon. From my experience you need to do a lot of planning and research. And if it doesn't work out then just live with it.

  3. Depends if you have fixed-income stocks or just looking to cash in.

  4. Set a goal of a % of return. Once you hit it then cash out. Simple.
