Canada's economy is rising

After 2016, a year of ups and downs for the Canadian economy, there’s a growing body of evidence suggesting 2017 will be a better year.

Here are five big reasons the economy could do a lot better than you might think this year.

The job market is recovering

It may be cold comfort to anyone still looking for work, but Canada’s job market ended 2016 on a bit of a tear, adding more than 200,000 jobs from August onwards. There were more than 50,000 new jobs in December alone.

  1. It’s really shameful that our economy is so heavily linked to the price of oil. Oil will end within the next 50 years and so what will Canada do then.

    Seems smarter for us as a nation to have our government start to shift to greener energy for long term job growth.

  2. I’m sure there will be many a naysayers on the right about this. All i have to say is look at Harper’s incompetent record.

  3. A lot of conservatives are not happy with Trudeau. Me thinks its because he is in favor of a carbon tax and so they feel such a tax might result in a ecnonomic downturn for 2017.

  4. Personally, i dont think the loonie will go higher in 2017 because of Trump or any other factor. I thikn its pretty much fixed in the 70s forever.

  5. Wow from the articles figures it seems part time jobs outpaced full time. Hope that’s not a trend.

  6. The TSX is up just because of a halo effect around the Dow which is almost at 20K. This is nothing special. And not a true indicator of positive things to come.
